Knee Procedures

Total Knee Replacement, Partial Knee Replacement, Revision Knee Replacement

As the largest joint in the body, the knee is the joint most often affected by osteoarthritis. This degenerative condition is one of the leading causes of disability among those aged 55 and older.

Within your knee, the end of the bones that join together to form the joint are covered with articular cartilage, a smooth and slippery substance that protects and cushions the bones as you bend and straighten your knee.

As you age, the cartilage in your knees wears down, eventually causing the bones to rub together. The resulting pain, swelling, and stiffness can make it extremely difficult to do the things you once had no problem doing, such as exercising, climbing stairs, and walking.

If the pain of knee arthritis is taking a toll on your life, then it’s time to consult an orthopedic surgeon. At Texas Orthopedics, Dr. McArthur will evaluate your condition and let you know what your options are. You may not need surgery right away. Nonsurgical treatments such as viscosupplementation or physical therapy might help enough to delay the need for surgery.

When surgery eventually becomes inevitable, Dr. McArthur specializes in knee reconstruction, including:

The knee can be divided into three compartments. If arthritis is confined to only one compartment, Dr. McArthur may recommend a partial knee replacement to replace only the damaged area instead of the entire joint. You can still have a total knee replacement down the road if necessary.

Dr. McArthur is also one of the few orthopedic surgeons in the Austin area to perform knee replacement revision to replace a worn-out artificial joint.
